Ellipse Elkshow -- Garbage Party

Live Performance by Ellipse Elkshow in Portland Oregon

To live during the garbage, to find comfort and empathy in the steaming pile of shit— Exploring the intersection between live improvised electronic music, mash-ups and sample-based [recontextual] media and the classic DJ mix, Ellipse Elkshow‘s first release for the stellar SAVANT imprint is both a document of a live moment and an introduction to the postmodern musical landscape. Garbage Party Live is a (free) contemplative, humorous and relevant sonic experience, inspired by the ideas and memories that pile up around us.

Rocked Bottom

"I want to see hedge-fund managers tipped into cage fights with naked Gypsies; bank managers wrestle with lions in the O2 arena; failed regulators thrown to alligators in the Royal Docks; short sellers in pits of snakes; and distinguished City economists try their luck with sharks. They've had their heyday, their bonuses, their Porsches, their fine wines and oafish ostentation - they've had their fun. Now for ours. To the guillotine!" -- Matthew Parris

Ellipse Elkshow King Questions Volume 1

The first installment of the King Question series is an abstract but extremely listenable work that focuses on the human search for meaning.

Certainty - as a concept - is pinned, sliced, and probed by a nearly indescribable mix of beats, noises, and words; samples and bits from radio, television, movies, contemporary music, and field recordings weave in and out, struggling with questions that are rarely answered.

Volume One of King Question(s) takes a narrow focus on the Nouns of life, more of the "WHAT" and "Where," while "WHY," "WHEN" and "HOW" take the bench for a moment.

But this isn't necessarily about intellectual word-play, at all. This is a DaDa musical sound-collage journey, equal parts minimal and maximal, toe-tapping and confounding. ... an engaging mash-up of thoughts, plans, faiths, and desires that challenges your expectations of music while exploring and exploding your expectations of life. SUBBA CULTCHA GIVES GITAR'S FALLUJAH 8/10 STARS

"This is a satirical statement more than a traditional album which is by turns shocking, hilarious and deeply moving. You keep expecting it to break into a thunderous hip-hop track but it never does, it constantly holds you on the edge of your seat before dropping you into a field of noisy textures and dense soundscapes populated by grieving widows, insane dictators and imbecilic presidents."

"It could be argued Gitar are taking it to it's logical conclusion but in theory this kind of thing has been done time and time again with the video mash-ups you see so abundantly on youtube. Where this differs however is in it's frank, emotional intensity, it may not grab you right away but listen intently through headphones and the message WILL sink in."
Benjamin Hiorns - Subba Cultcha

Gitar - Fallujah

Fallujah is a region in Iraq, with a rich and vibrant history. Often known as the "city of mosques," It is situated less than fifty miles from Baghdad, on the Euphrates River. During the Gulf War of 1991, civilian deaths in Fallujah were some of the highest in the entire war. In 2004, During the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq, hundreds of Fallujah's people were slaughtered, while the use of "white phosphorus" and other forms of ecological terror have lead to an extreme spike in cancer cases.

Fallujah, the album, was constructed between 2008 and 2010. The songs originated out of live sets that Gitar performed throughout 2008. The sounds represent the attempt to understand atrocity and terror, from a distance. The sounds remember the crowded open air markets crumbling under the weight of bomb blasts, the fear that mother's had for their children, the fear and misunderstandings of the soldier, the attempt to ignore, justify, fight back and cry. This album is empathetic, but claims to only attempt to understand, and to attempt to engage others in this understanding . . .this rebuilding. It is a match lit in a dark room, in hopes that we all might see, at least for a moment. We are offering Fallujah as a free digital download (mp3 256kbps). Download it here. If you are feeling generous, please donate.

Gitar on Over the Edge Radio

On July 16th 2010 the members of gitar (ellipse elkshow & i cut people) got to live out a fantasy and be guests on Don Joyce's Over the Edge Radio live on KPFA in Berkeley, California. Starting at 12am and armed with 2 laptops, 2 samplers and an arsenal of smart media cards, gitar performed for 3 straight hours (without coffee, i might add) to promote their most recent release, "Stuffed" on Negativland's Seeland Records. The night, or rather morning, was filled with laughs, nonsensicalities, girl talk (bleh), and Don telling them to, "Turn down the fucking mixer!" Gitar had a hard time hearing themselves...

The show started off with a live solo set by Gitar (performing the album, "Fallujah"), leading into 2.5 hours of improving. phew. A big "thank you" goes out to Don Joyce for having Gitar as guests on his show. Below is the entire set streamed through kpfa's website. enjoy.

Gitar - Stuffed

"A thought-provoking, genre confounding, headache inducing work, the duo’s album ‘Stuffed’ is appropriately named, firing out snippets of popular culture with nauseating speed to create a kind of warped 21st century tapestry, a map of samples, torn from their original contexts and used to create an appropriately scattershot commentary on the world of today." - Subba Cultura

Rising out of the collage tradition, Gitar [post post poster artists, I Cut People & Ellipse Elkshow] hold their breath and stare critically at the sources of information and entertainment in contemporary Western society. Pop music, advertisements, radio, television and film are sent through the microscope and the meat-grinder, to be reorganized into fun, disturbing, satirical, informative and utterly ridiculous packets of sonic brain food. Consume this, get Stuffed, and see if you're still hungry for prime time. Stuffed will be released on both Seeland Records and BBT(VS)MM. Read Reviews » | Buy Now » | Buy Digital Download »

Gitar - Psychedelic Pigeon Pop

Psychedelic Pigeon Pop is yet another gitar improv created at the start of 2010. I have to say, it's pretty fucking psychedelic and is sure to freak out any avid user of LSD and guaranteed to give former users of the drug a flashback or two. This particular improv was created during a gitar mini tour in February 2010. There are plenty of stand out tracks, but to name a few: virgil's apple, shatner's confessions, the pumpkin man, more toulan blood, lucky bastard, Porkchops and Apple Sauce and is that what you are saying?

Ultra Red Compilation

What is the Sound of War on the Poor In an increasingly conservative climate within electronic music and the audio arts, Public Record remains committed to releasing projects that do more than make political claims or represent political ideas. Like the Ultra-red organization itself, Public Record provides a space for exchange between artists and audiences of art directly engaging the political. The German art critic Walter Benjamin once rebuked the Surrealists, demanding that artists who assume the mantle of revolutionaries would do better engaging actual political struggles than promoting their individual artistic careers. Benjamin challenges artists to pursue sustained and committed relationships with social movements. Conversely, simply listening to political movements poses its own inadequacies. Convention and territorialism inflict many political organizers producing tendencies that result in stagnation. Leadership too often becomes a claim to power rather than a participatory process. A challenge to instrumentalism, a critique of goal-driven strategizing, a deconstruction of exclusions, and the distribution of power can inform art's contribution to an encounter with(in) social movements. Solidity, duration, and faith in the process become necessary conditions for such an encounter. As Ultra-red member Leonardo Vilchis argues on the release "Encuentro" (PR 2-01-011), let these terms define the basis of a sound political art practice. This year, look for new projects on Public Record by artists such as Christopher DeLaurenti, Ashley Hunt, Elliot Perkins, Terre Thaemlitz, and various teams within the Ultra-red organization.
